Once Upon a ZINE...

On February 6th, 2023, Eliana "Eli" Coe decided to grab breakfast at the NewsBar Café on University Pl. The establishment, staying true to its 1994 aesthetic, had a stack of newspapers on a cart in the center of the ordering area. Coe quickly became engrossed in the CYOA-esque rabbit holes of the newspapers, reading up on the legendary Grammy awards from the previous evening. It was at that moment when a buried desire from their youth bubbled up to the surface.

"Why can't I?"

Armed with the knowledge of Zine history & POC/Queer protest culture from a Queer & Trans Game Design course they took in the Spring of 2022 at NYU, Eli embarked on a journey to create an anti-capitalist, inclusive, artsy (fartsy) platform that would inspire people to put themselves out there and celebrate art in community. And what better place to start than Downtown...

Ariana Calderón submitted her poem "birthday cake" for the inaugural edition of Zine Almighty. After Eli published "My Funny Valentine" (featuring Ariana's poem) Ariana was deeply inspired by the artistic community ZA had already started to build, and decided to reach out to Eli in hopes of becoming a collaborator. Eli and Ari met at Think Coffee on Mercer & West 3rd and schemed through the afternoon, sharing ideas and making big plans for the future of Zine Almighty. Ariana officially became a co-editor and the Zine Almighty team became two!
